How to Cover Small Events Using Social Media

Major sports events such as Euro 2016 and the upcoming Olympics are obvious candidates to be covered through social media. Millions of people are sharing their experiences with the whole world. But what about smaller events? Provide your readers with a new perspective by complementing your own content with social content from the scene. Here’s how.

Apple’s WWDC

Take for example Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC). Not really a small event anymore as it will be attended by a couple of thousand people. WWDC kicks off with a Keynote presentation on Monday June 13, which will be attended by a large number of journalists and many developers who will share their experiences with the world on social media. The perfect opportunity to use social media to help cover the event.

Location features

The Crowdynews social widget below (fullpage example) shows a few possible approaches which can be used for any smaller event. For example, by leveraging location features helping you to gather content from a specific location only. But what if the location is a public area where other people are allowed too? Will they not mess up my stream of content? No, not necessarily. Through whitelisting you could constrain the results so there’s not only the location requirement to be met but also a keyword/hashtag like ‘wwdc’ or ‘apple’.

Create a list of people on the scene

Another solution is to create a list of (your) reporters on the scene and display directly what they share on one or multiple social media channels. These can easily be combined with other sources, such as your own Twitter or Facebook account. You could even expand the selection with some official accounts to create an even better mix of content.

Show what’s popular

Create even more engagement by showing how much people are sharing your content on Twitter. You may use the same whitelisting functionality to ensure only results about your preferred topics will be displayed. Moreover, the Crowdynews platform gives you full control over how to display: choose the fullpage example above, display content in a responsive horizontal widget, or use our APIs to create your own.
