PEOTUS: Social Media and Politics

Whether you love him or hate him, Donald Trump will soon be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States in a few short hours.

One thing everyone can agree on is that the road to the White House has been filled with pot holes. From the beginning of the primaries to the day before the inauguration, Trump has kept the world on edge through his use of social media.

At the height of campaigning this past fall, the Pew Research Center released “The Political Environment on Social Media.” One of the key findings in the report states “More than one-third of social media users are worn out by the amount of political content they encounter, and more than half describe their online interactions with those they disagree with politically as stressful and frustrating.” In spite of this sentiment, social media has been a rallying conduit for both supporters and detractors. Personally, I have double-downed on Facebook. As a fairly passive Facebook user up until the election, I have begun to “share” and “like” posts by similar-thinkers. I’m even beginning to flirt with the idea of creating original content to share on this channel.

As to why Twitter is Trump’s preferred platform, I think he sums it up quite nicely in the following tweet:

And, he vows to continue to use Twitter as a platform regardless of the nearly unanimous plea to suspend his account.

So, it is not surprising that so many respond in kind. Following is a social stream highlighting today’s events. It’s interesting to note that there are just as many posts from people who are excited to attend the inauguration as there are those who plan to protest. As many of my friends have stated, both republicans and democrats, we are entering into very interesting times.
