Social Media Curation for Special Events: #BlackFriday

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: the start of the holiday shopping season, right after Thanksgiving. With Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday behind us, it’s time for a social media recap. #GivingTuesday, which started in 2012, typically marks a day of charity after the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. It started out as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season. This national movement is dedicated to charitable giving during the holidays.

This year’s Black Friday campaigns broke several seasonal social media records, making it the most social yet. Social media also impacted both Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales enormously. Adobe also analyzed social media sentiment based on 35 million mentions, and says 56% of comments about Cyber Monday were positive, compared with 40% of Black Friday references. Early figures show that Giving Tuesday already raised $117 million for charities.

Safe to say, social media has a huge impact on the two biggest shopping days of the year. There was a lot of social buzz going on: in the span of five days, the combined total impressions equaled 8.5 billion and there were also over 1.5 million social mentions on #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday.
