NFL Draft Day Surprises Captured in Social Media

NFL Draft Day 1 did not disappoint. By all accounts, the first day of the NFL draft picks was a wild one. From the emotional response by Takkarist McKinley to three quarterback selections in round 1, analysts and fans were equally surprised.

Hands down, the biggest shocker was the price paid for the three quarterbacks from a class considered to be unexceptional. First, Deshaun Watson was selected by the Houston Texans. Tom Savage is the assumed opening-day starter for the Texans, but Watson will undoubtedly play at some point during the 2017 season. The Texans traded their 2017 No. 25 pick this year plus the team’s 2018 first-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for the No. 12 pick.

Second, Mitchell Trubisky, was signed by the Chicago Bears. It was widely known that the Browns were interested in signing Trubisky. What surprised both commentators and fans was the Bears moving from the third to the second spot overall in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. Bears manager Ryan Pace gave up the 3rd overall pick along with their 3rd– and 4th-rounder in 2017 and third-round pick in 2018.  According to fans on Twitter, trading up to pick Trubinsky was a controversial move by the Bears.

Even NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah was stunned by the Bears strategy, “Is it OK to be speechless? The second pick of the draft?”

Trubinsky was more practical in his thinking. “I’m going to go into a great situation, where Mike [Glennon] is the starter,” Trubisky told reporters Thursday night. “So I look forward to learning from him and the other veterans on the team. I just have to come in, prove myself, learn the offense as quick as possible and help the Chicago Bears win.”

And finally, Patrick Mahomes was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 10th overall spot. Kansas City traded their first-and third-round picks this year as well as their first-rounder next year to move up from 27 to the 10th spot. What makes Mahomes such a controversial pick is his undisciplined playing style.

One of the more memorable moments from yesterday’s NFL Draft Day was Takkarist McKinley, round 1, 27th pick by the Atlanta Falcons. McKinley shared his promise to play division 1 to his late grandmother just prior to her passing away.
